Financial aid for heat pumps: what’s available for 2024
Are you planning to purchase a heat pump? Did you know that grants are available to support this undertaking? Making your home more comfortable might be even more beneficial than you thought!
Read our article to learn more about the subsidies that are available in Quebec for 2024.
Why apply for a subsidy for installing a heat pump?
To encourage the transition to more sustainable energy consumption, our governments have decided to offer residents funding programs for the purchase of a heat pump. This initiative aims to promote a shift to greener sources of energy.
Fuel oil heating systems, which are still present in numerous homes throughout the country, are very expensive and produce an undue amount of pollution. Heat pumps are more energy efficient and emit fewer pollutants than heating methods that use fuel oil or wood.
The heat pump subsidy from Hydro-Québec
Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert Efficient Homes Program offers financial aid of up to $6,720 for the purchase of a high-efficiency heat pump.
Who is eligible for financial assistance from Hydro-Québec for a heat pump?
The Hydro-Québec subsidy for purchasing a residential heat pump applies to the owners of the following types of dwellings:
- Residential buildings
- Houses, condominiums and multiplexes
- Apartment complexes with 19 units or fewer
To qualify for the heat pump subsidy offered by Hydro-Québec, the dwellings must be inhabitable year round and powered by electricity from Hydro-Québec, an independent network or a municipal grid. The deadline for submitting an application is September 30, 2024.
Other subsidy programs for installing a heat pump
In Quebec, the installation of a heat pump is eligible for financial aid through the Rénoclimat and Novoclimat programs. The selected heat pump must appear on the list of qualifying models, and the property owner must meet all the conditions of the program.
The program grants a reimbursement of $50 per thousand BTU of heat at -8° C, i.e. $500 for a 10,000 BTU/hr heat pump or $1,000 for a 20,000 BTU/hr heat pump.
The Rénoclimat Program for heat pumps
The Rénoclimat Program encourages energy-efficient renovations to reduce energy consumption and improve household comfort.
Admissible dwellings include individual homes, duplexes, triplexes and multi-family residential buildings with up to three floors and a maximum ground area of 600 square meters.
The Rénoclimat Program provides access to the Canada Greener Homes Grant, which offers subsidies ranging from $125 to $5,000 to help homeowners improve their energy efficiency. Even though the Canada Greener Homes Grant ended on February 19, 2024, the Rénoclimat Program is still in effect and continues to offer this financial aid at the provincial level.
The Canada Greener Homes Loan and the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability programs also remain open.
Federal financing for conversion from oil to heat pump
To motivate homeowners to switch from fuel oil heating to a heat pump and thereby reduce their ecological footprint, the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program offers between $10,000 and $15,000 in financial aid, depending on the province.
What are the eligibility criteria for the federal subsidy for the purchase of a heat pump?
- The home must be an eligible property type
- The home’s heating system must run on fuel oil
- The homeowner must submit recent receipts confirming the purchase of at least 500 liters of fuel oil during the past 12 months
- The home must be connected to a North American electrical grid
Available since January of 2023, the program is still open if you would like to apply for funding.
